After a poor 2013 fiscal year, Square Enix executives attributed the company's 2014 return to profitability in part to the game's strong sales and subscriber base, reaching a total of over 24 million registered players by October 2021, also becoming the most profitable Final Fantasy game to date. The game released to largely positive reception critics praised the game for its solid mechanics and progression, and they commended Yoshida for turning the project around. The original version shut down in November 2012 and was followed by an alpha test for Version 2.0. This new game, initially dubbed "Version 2.0", features a new game engine, improved server infrastructure, and revamped gameplay, interface, and story. This team was responsible for generating content for the original version as well as developing a brand new game which would address all of the previous release's criticisms. In response, then-Square Enix President Yoichi Wada announced that a new team, led by Yoshida, would take over and attempt to fix the issues with it. The original Final Fantasy XIV, released in September 2010, was a commercial and critical failure. As Eorzea recovers and rebuilds, the player must deal with the impending threat of invasion by the Garlean Empire from the north. Through the gods' blessing, the player character escapes the devastation by time traveling five years into the future. At the conclusion of the original game, the primal dragon Bahamut escapes from its lunar prison to initiate the Seventh Umbral Calamity, an apocalyptic event which destroys much of Eorzea. Final Fantasy XIV takes place in the fictional land of Eorzea, five years after the events of the original 2010 release. Directed and produced by Naoki Yoshida, it was released worldwide for Windows and PlayStation 3 in August 2013, as a replacement for the failed 2010 version of the game, with support for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and macOS releasing later. Personally, I’d be excited to see the game on Xbox consoles so that more people get the chance to try it out.Final Fantasy XIV is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix. And despite having most of my free trial days left, I’ve been considering the monthly subscription for a more fleshed-out experience. Last week, I finally gave into temptation and purchased Final Fantasy XIV Online I just can’t put the game down. Since we’re currently involved in the development of Endwalker and preparing the PS5 version to follow on from the title’s service on PS4, it’d be appreciated if we can return to touch upon the Xbox version once things have settled!” “Now when it comes to the Xbox version, there’s unfortunately not much I can say presently but just that we cannot work on all the steps simultaneously and need to follow the order for proceeding with these things. For that we are truly grateful!” Yoshida would go on to voice the team’s commitment to the platforms that the game is available on, but a potential Xbox release could happen when things settle down: “We were able to undertake development and provide our service thanks to the immense efforts that Phil has invested. However, Yoshida did offer the inkling of some exciting news with VG247, There are no obstacles for developing the Xbox version,” Yoshida said. So it kind of exponentially grows the amount of resources that needs to be allocated.” The amount of work that goes into different aspects of the game takes considerable time due to the team’s meticulousness: “ We have to think about long-term planning with additional platforms, we need additional testing for that particular platform. Yoshida seemed to be less confident in an Xbox version of Final Fantasy XIV Online when talking to The Washington Post. In two different interviews with The Washington Postand VG247, producer Naoki Yoshida commented on the likelihood that players would get to explore Eorzea with their friends on Xbox consoles. With A PlayStation 5 demo slated for the summer and another large-scale content drop in the form of Endwalker, Final Fantasy XIV Online will likely continue to find success. Final Fantasy XIV Online veterans can surely remember the early days of the game’s disastrous launch and it’s eventual remake - A Realm Reborn - which catapulted the MMORPG into the spotlight and established it as one of the most popular online experiences of all time.
